Parallels solution for Linux utilizes OS virtualization which provides the highest density ratios in the industry today — 3 times higher than hypervisor solutions. High density ratios convert into hundreds of virtual environments helping to get more out of existing servers and potentially eliminating the need for new server purchases this fiscal year.

Parallels solution for Linux is unique in the industry with platform independence. The same virtualization platform and management APIs work on x86 and x64. Parallels is the only virtualization vendor that can support multiple Linux distributions and editions installed in the same host.

Managing hundreds of virtual environments can be complex. Parallels Virtual Automation (PVA), formerly known as Parallels Infrastructure Manager, provides administrators with a web-based management console providing a global view to manage their infrastructure. While Parallels solution for Linux provides automatic resource balancing, the IT administrator has the ability to manually set thresholds and rebalance when alerted that thresholds have been reached.

Operating system and application templates provide the ability to quickly provision as well as manage versions and updates of applications and operating systems with a single task. This eliminates the manual process of updating each individual virtual machine required by hypervisor solutions.

OS Virtualization

The strength behind Parallels solution for Linux is OS virtualization. Virtualizing at the host operating system provides a common virtualization layer that allocates system resources across all virtual servers, called containers. The result is a leaner and more efficient virtualization solution with low overhead — approximately 2%.

Low overhead facilitates near-native server performance. This is accomplished by utilizing native DLL’s and hardware drivers as well as database and application optimizations. System resources are allocated in real-time across all containers ensuring that no resource is wasted as with hypervisor pre-allocation scenarios. The result is fast execution of management operations such as context switching and memory management.

Intelligent partitioning divides each physical server into hundreds of containers, each having full server functionality and processes: root or administrator access, system libraries, etc. These partitions are flexible and can be changed in real-time without affecting the workload or container. Each container contains links back to the standard operating system which make the container footprint very small, facilitate software templating, and make operations, such as backup, lightening fast.

Parallels uses the mature Linux kernel for critical tasks and native APIs for system resources such as CPU scheduler, memory, hardware drivers, network, file system access and architecture specific management code. Isolation ensures that workloads are completely independent of each other and system actions are not visible to the "e;outside"e; world reducing potential for attack. In the event a workload experiences a virus or attack, it will not affect any other workload or the environment.
